Black women are being sued into silence for defending themselves.

Bre (@breromiofficial ) invented an incredible magnetic hair clip. When she spoke up after seeing a white woman copying it and selling it online, that woman, Kursten Owen, cried victim.

😭
Then @kiandria saw it happen and spoke up to defend Bre.

Now Kursten is suing both of them.

🤬

Within 6 days of filing her lawsuit, Kursten got a gag order that even a UCLA First Amendment professor flagged as constitutionally shaky. White woman tears turned into a federal muzzle overnight.

Everything I’ve shared here is my opinion, based on publicly available information and court documents.

White women tears are dangerous. And as white women, the bare minimum is to call it out when we see it in real time. We need to recognize how our behavior upholds systems of harm, take responsibility, and choose to do better.

Kursten Owen. (Elegance and Geekery) We see what you’re doing. You may have silenced Bre and Kiandria for now — but you can’t silence all of us who watched this play out in real time. You can’t stop us from reading the public court filings, or the legal scholars calling your gag order what it is: unconstitutional overreach.

It looks like another example of Black innovation being copied and stolen could be happening. @brebreromi @breromiofficial , a Black inventor, created a unique product that bundles hair and locks with colorful magnetic hair clicks. Her creation has now been allegedly copied by another woman, and now that woman IS SUING BRE and even sued an activist @kiandria who came to BrE’s defense.

But where is Black media? Not one post, but 25 posts. Not one 10-minute interview, but 10 one-hour interviews.

That is the point. When threats like this hit our community, why are we not giving them repeated, consistent attention?

If anyone in Black media cares to explain why these conversations only get five minutes on air, five minutes on a podcast, or a single post, let me know.

Because that isn’t Black media.

That’s silence when we need a megaphone.
